The Radio Show
Broadcasting since February 7, 1997, Prime Time Polkas is heard Saturdays from 11AM - 1PM on 620 AM WKHB Radio with 5,500 watts of power serving the southwestern PA area including the entire Pittsburgh market plus parts of Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland (view KHB's coverage map).  Hosted by Pam & Jerry Zagar and Don Rutkauskas, we specialize in playing the best of Slovenian / Cleveland style polkas and waltzes in a professional-style format; with MORE MUSIC, and LESS TALK!  You may hear an occasional Polish, German and/or Italian tune thrown in for diversity.  We produce this program with you, the listener, in mind. Featured are a lot of the newer music including premieres of new recordings and interviews with the musicians that produce them. From time to time, special guests show up unannounced and add to the spontaneity of this show.  We certainly hope you enjoy our show and if you do, please tell your friends wherever they are!  (more..)

Our exclusive YouTube videos now number 80+ in total!  Just uploaded are videos from Illinois Polkafest 2008 including the likes of Steve Meisner, Bob Doszak, International Main Street Polka Band, Klancnik & Friends and Karl Lukitsch.  Don't miss classic performances by Miskulin, Vadnal, Pecon, Wojtila, Markic & Zagger, Trebar, Perko, Sluga & Papesh on the popular Cleveland, Ohio, television show Polkatime USA hosted by Joey Miskulin back in the early 1980s.   Also available are six new-to-you videos of the Klancnik & Friends Band performance at the Frankenmuth (MI) Summer Music Fest '07.  Vids have been posted of Johnny Koenig, Jack Tady, Eddie Rodick & Don Wojtila bands from Tony Petkovsek's Thanksgiving Polka Party in Cleveland, Ohio, on Thursday, Friday & Saturday, Nov. 22-24, 2007.  Enjoy our flagship video - the nearly 10-minute long video of the Benzy Rathbone Combo live at the Slovenian Ballroom in Herminie, PA, on Friday, December 15, 1989.  Visit our YouTube home page to see all our uploaded videos.

Bob Doszak's Illinois Polkafest was held February 1-3, 2008, at the new location in Naperville, IL - fantastic music, good friends & no shortage of refreshments!  Special thanks to Bob Doszak for the hospitality & putting on one of our favorite events of the year.  More special thanks to Karl & Julie Lukitsch and Phillip & Janet Palmieri for doing another great job hosting the bus full of people from Pittsburgh, PA, & Youngstown, OH.  Check out the lineup for Illinois Polkafest 2009.

VIEW ENTIRE 2007 WINNER/NOMINATION LIST  The voting members of the National Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame have given us the 2007 Support / Promotion Crystal Award at the Polka Hall of Fame Awards Show XX on Saturday, November 24, 2007, in Euclid, OH.  This is our 7th consecutive year being nominated for this prestigious annual award & our first time bringing home a winner!  We thank YOU, all the people that voted for us.  In anything we do, we can't do it without YOU.  On a local note, congrats to Pennsylvania musicians Joe Grkman Jr., Mike Grkman, Steve Grkman,  GRKMANIA (the band), Bobby Zgonc, Sam Pugliano ("Barking Dog" greatest hit) & Kim (Skovenski) Rodick, formerly of PA, for their nominations.  NEW - view our second acceptance speech at the Meet the Winners Reception/Dance later that day back at the Cleveland Marriott Downtown.

Looking for festive Christmas polka music for the holiday season?  Visit our Christmas Music page for some Prime Time recommendations.

Are you concerned with the rising epidemic of polka addiction?  Well, you should be.  View one man's story on "Freaks, Geeks & Addicts" with correspondent Seymour Butts on YouTube.  For your information, that one man fronts Larry Klima's favorite alternative punk rock polka band.

I was in one of our local brew distributors recently & came across a case of "Prime Time Beer."  It's apparently made by Blues City Brewing right here in the 'Burgh.  Anyone familiar with this brew?  If so, e-mail me.  Verrrry interesting.

Big things are in the works for our Live365 Broadcasting Station.  We admit it is in need of some updating.  The playlist will be overhauled to include the very latest polka recordings to the classics of the 1940s, 1950s and up.  The station's bitrate will be increased to 32kbps in mp3pro full stereo sound.  This is a monumental undertaking considering our current Live365 playlist is close to 34 hours with over 700 polkas & waltzes, so give us time.  We promise it'll be worth the wait!

Special thanks to our friends and long-time sponsors Frank (Jr. & Sr.) & Darryl Valencic at Tomsic Motors in Washington, PA, as we again rode in the Canonsburg (PA) July 4th, 2007, parade - one of the largest celebrations in the state.

Are you from here or who have you spent any length of time in Pittsburgh?  First, take the quiz, then see if these are true.

As mentioned on one of our previous broadcasts, we present to you essential summertime transportation:  The "Cruzin Cooler combines two basic necessities of life, the ability to have cold food or a beverage handy along with the means to get somewhere."

10th Anniversary Benefit Dance
We've come across some interesting stuff posted by fellow polka DJ Joe Godina from Hermitage, PA, of some rare live video footage hosted on YouTube of polka bands from many years ago.

As mentioned on one of our previous broadcasts, Pam's "Babu's Tattoo" t-shirt.  Many locations worldwide including St. Mark Square in New York, NY & their new location in Clairton, PA.  Click the image for a larger view.  Mention Prime Time Polkas & receive a FREE 1" x 1" button box tattoo on the body part of your choice.

Visit our new WEB GALLERY of assorted recent pics from the annals of prime time picture taking.  We'll be digging into the archives to find some rare pics of our first broadcasting experiences, polka dances & more.  Remember the good ol' days of 1992?

A new book is on the market written by Bob Dolgan (long-time writer for Cleveland, OH, newspaper Plain Dealer and husband of the National Cleveland Style Polka Hall of Fame's current president Cecilia Dolgan) about The Real Story of America's Polka King Frankie Yankovic.  The book is softcover with 238 pages & 24 black/white photographs.  Buy it at Amazon.com & read a review written by Milwaukee (WI) polka musician Tom Brusky.

HEAR US ON THE WORLD'S LARGEST INTERNET RADIO NETWORK!
We've updated our Live365 STEREO broadcasting station with 40+ new tunes from the latest polka recordings and more of our trademark KHB liners/sweepers.  The goal is to make this station stay as fresh as possible.  The playlist is currently almost 34 hours long (yep, 34 HOURS!) with 750 selections of new & classic polka/waltz material.  If you're not using Winamp with the mp3pro plug-in, you're not getting the FM stereo radio sound.  Please go to our Broadcasts page and follow the necessary steps to take advantage of this improvement.  Also there is our archived 620 KHB weekly broadcasts if you need more polkas.  Enjoy!

Steve "American Idol" & Marge "MoPo" Pucker were recently featured in an article written by Sara Saine in the Pittsburgh Senior News.  Steve talks about his playing career & his CD.  Also, George "Maharishi" Suhon tells his story in the posted e-mail message of the numerous potential hazards in the music business, especially those he encountered while working with and recording Steve Pucker on his project Steve Pucker Sings...Again.  Find it all on our Pucker page.

Read this article from MKE, one of Milwaukee's newest news and entertainment magazines published by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.  The cover story is about young people involved in the polka scene in the Milwaukee area (of course).  Interviewees include Mike Schneider, Tom Brusky, Steve Meisner, John & Karrie Gostomski (congrats on their baby on the way!) and more.  Thanks to Mike Schneider for passing us the details.

A relatively new feature to this site...Essential Recordings contains a listing of required listening whether you're a new fan of the music or have been ever since you can remember.  There are only 8 recordings listed as of today with many more to come in the future.  Do you have these recordings in your collection?  We think you should.  Find out what they are by visiting our Essential Recordings page.
